I was tasked with recreating a piece by the artist Patty Chang. This video is a replication of Patty Chang's Nunchuck video from 2003. Below is the original project proposal. 2014
I was assigned the artist Patty Chang; she is a video artist that originally trained as a painter. She is notorious for her appearance in her own videos to the point that she has been referred to as "hair-raisingly narcissistic." This is in stark contrast to the majority of my videos where I place my role on the other side of the camera. It seems in her videos she typically explores an element of her persona, mainly fear. This is most apparent in her videos Eels (wherein she records herself having eels stuffed into her shirt) and For Love (her controversial video where she eats an onion out of each of her parents' mouth).
Being that the majority of her videos range between one and two minutes in length, I will be recreating several of her videos for this project. I have a few particular videos to recreate in mind and they are as follows: Contortion (a video where she "contorts" her body in impossible ways), Fountain (a video featuring Patty Chang and her liquid reflection), Eels, and [Watermelon] Nunchuck.
I feel as though the aforementioned videos show a variety of her work that would yield both visual and technical differences. I also feel that this would allow me to be more particular in an installation perspective of this project. I am considering showing the videos alongside stills as it appears that is how Patty Chang presents her work. I also strongly feel that the recreation of these specific pieces would in a way force me outside of my usual comfort zone and enable me to experiment.
